How do I register as self-employed?
It is very easy to register for self-employment. Head to the government’s online registration portal and enter your email address. You need a business tax account, so this is the first link you will click. By clicking here you are taken to a sign in page. Click create sign in details. Enter your email address and you will then be sent a code to your email address to allow you to continue to set up the gateway account. Add self assessment to your account and click I do not have a UTR number. From here follow the links to register for self assessment.
Complete the registration process. The information you will need is as follows:-
- the date you started your business
- basic personal details, including your National Insurance number and home address
- information about the job you do
- Register for self assessment
What happens next?
Once you’re registered, HMRC will send you a letter with your 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR). HMRC will also set up your online account, which gives you access to a range of digital government services.
This part of the process usually takes around seven to 10 days, but you can call HMRC for an update if it’s taking longer.
