STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO SETTING UP A PERSONAL TAX ACCOUNT

Type in HMRC in your search bar and click HMRC services sign in

Click the green “sign in” button

Create sign in details

Fill in your email address

HMRC will send you an email to confirm this

Next HMRC will ask for your full name

Create password

Then your Government gateway number will appear on the screen. This has also been emailed to you to print off and write your password on this piece of paper. Keep this in a safe place!

You need to register for an Individual account

Set up additional security – click text message, add your phone number and you will receive a text to gain access to your account. This will happen every time you log in to your personal account.

Next words on screen are “We need to check your identity”

Fill in your name and date of birth

National Insurance number

Once you get to the page “we need to confirm your identity” you can do this in one of 2 ways.

Match your face to documents – this is the easiest way

Or

Enter details about your documents and records.

Follow the instructions for match your face – this can be a little tedious, however unfortunately necessary!

Once completed it will say “We have now confirmed your identity”

Choose how to receive your tax letters

Finally, you’re in!
